Avocado – The Super Tasty Super Fruit

FoodForThoughtWednesdayOOOOOWEEEEEEE, we love Avocados. We could eat on them on the daily and in fact, we do. Okay, bacon and chocolate too but since we’re focusing on the healthy super powers of the scrumptious fruit, Avocado, we’ll keep those indulgences for another day. Back to the ‘Nutrient Booster’ at hand, this is the ode to Avocado. First off, it’s a fruit not a veggie. It’s actually a large single seed berry to be precise. The oldest evidence of the avocado dates back to around 10,000 BC in the Coxcatlán region of Mexico and it’s been changing lives ever since. Although 75% of their calories come from fat, the Avocado’s fat is monounsaturated and polyunsaturated(AKA: The ‘good kind’ of fats….and yes, in moderation there is such a thing) They are also a good source of Omega 3s, have 60% more potassium than bananas and are rich in Vitamin B, E, A, K and other heart-healthycarotenoids. But it doesn’t stop there! Avocados have a high fiber content (good for flat belly days!) and are an excellent source of zinc, magnesium, copper, iron and even calcium. All of this combined makes them one of the best anti-aging foods around. Th eD-manno-heptulose sugar that is found in Avocados has been shown to improve the skin epidermis by boosting collagen formation. The specific amino acids and carotenoid anti-oxidants contained in Avocados help reduce age spots, soothe inflammation and heals scars and burns. So the next time you think about passing on the Guac, or say “Hold the Avo” on your sandwich, go ahead…..indulge a bit. We guarantee it’ll be worth every delicious and super nutritious bite!
